COVID has seen a huge upturn in do-it-yourself projects. According to a recent survey, more than 80% of Millennials have engaged in DIY home improvement projects over the last several months. Countless others have taken on new hobbies or encouraged their kids’ independence and creativity with self-directed music, arts, and crafts.

So how can you apply a DIY model to your professional and personal growth? After years of executive coaching and corporate training, I have designed the DIY Professional Retreat. This is a do-it-yourself, structured retreat that integrates the professional and personal aspects of your life into a game plan for the upcoming year and beyond.

Let’s take this great idea for professionals and executive leaders apart by focusing on three important words. DIY. Professional. Retreat.

Is it possible to engage in a meaningful focus on your professional life by yourself? Yes, if you have the right attitude. Right attitude means having the courage and making the time. Here is what I recently heard from my clients when I talked about the idea of a DIY Professional Retreat:

“This seems daunting because I’ve never taken a whole day to myself”.

“It’s scary to think about spending an entire day alone with my thoughts.”

“I’m excited at the prospect of doing this but can’t imagine what it would be like.”

Well, fortunately, I can imagine precisely what it would be like because I know exactly how to plan a DIY Professional Retreat.  That’s why I urge you to request a complimentary DIY Retreat Planner and Sample Retreat Agenda.

And the issue of time? I think the writer and motivational speaker, Denis Waitley, says it well: “Personal development is the belief that you are worth the effort, time and energy needed to develop yourself.”

I have to tell you that when I heard those comments from my clients, I wanted to reach through the Zoom call, give each of them a big hug, and say, “You need this more than anything. It will be one of the most fulfilling and productive days of your year! Please permit yourself to take a well-deserved retreat.”

I can’t help to think about how many other high achievers out there don’t allow time to pause for an entire day or two to get intentional on what they want to accomplish in the coming year. As a reformed high achiever who did not go on retreats for years and now religiously makes the time, I’d like to share with you the professional and business advantages of being uber-focused with no distractions during a DYI Professional Retreat:

  • Enables you to move forward intentionally into the new year doing more of what worked and eliminating what did not
  • Clarifies what you want to achieve in the coming year and creates a roadmap of how you will get there
  • Enhances the flow of creative ideas that present themselves in a retreat environment
  • Gives you a higher probability of achieving your goals
  • Advocates self-care — something most high achieving executives forget to do
  • Connects you to your true, authentic self that only comes from stepping away from business-as-usual

Let’s face it. The idea of going on a yoga, marriage, or team-building retreat is probably not foreign to you. But going on a DIY Professional Retreat may seem a bit strange. It is not. I have based it on my own experience, productivity research, and one of the four pillars that hold up my practice.

Consider or be open to the idea that all humans have their own inner-guidance/inner-coach.

What I mean by this is that there is an internal guidance system at work in each of us to help us walk through every aspect of our lives. Our true work is to find, trust, and follow that inner guidance in order to be the best for ourselves, our families, our communities, and the organizations we work in. By doing this, we foster an environment of creativity rather than following the masses. However, we can only come in touch with this internal guidance system when we step away, get quiet, and self-reflect.

The ultimate benefit for your DIY Professional Retreat is choosing to live your life by design rather than default.  When you plan a retreat like this, it provides exactly the environment you need to refresh, recharge, and reconnect with what you want to achieve and who you want to become.

Please give yourself permission to step away on your own to create the business, life, and dreams you are capable of achieving.
